Hello world!

Pig Flickr by be kheNow, why did I pick the first sunny day in two months to start the R.J. Julia blog? I should be outside, enjoying a rare day without rain. But the birds chirp, the cats snooze in the windows, catching the breeze, and I can hear the neighbor’s radio softly playing oldies rock -  close enough to the great outdoors for me. I could never live in San Diego: too many days of perfect weather and very few days of guilt-free, enforced indoor activity (like reading).

The rain of the past few weeks (months?) gave me a chance to read one or two things that have been lingering in my teetering book pile. One that I’ll be putting in lots of folks hands is The Pig Did It by Joseph Caldwell. A very self-deluded American travels to his aunt’s cottage in Ireland to indulge in his grief (which seems to more closely resemble a fit of pique) after the somewhat dim object of his passion fails to notice his attentions. Unfortunately for Aaron, his sulk is interrupted by the appearance of a pig, and the skeleton this pig digs up in his aunt’s vegetable garden. The Pig Did It

I enjoyed watching Aaron’s unearned self-importance get brought down to size, and loved listening to the other characters out-curse each other. I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Caldwell in Brattleboro last week, and he was everything I expected from his book: full of fun and good stories.

Okay, I’m absolutely going out for a walk now. Really.
